Help with Social anxiety and excesive sweating.?

First off just let me say that I have been abusing Marijuana for the past 8 years. I have always had problems with social anxiety which marijuana helped to alleviate. However, I no longer want to be dependent on an illegal substance and want to stop using marijuana for a host of other reasons. Now that I've stopped using marijuana my social anxiety is back in full force. In fact, I believe that my long term marijuana use has exacerbated my situation. I now find that in social situations I beggin to sweat very profusely to the point where it will be dripping off of my forehead and drenching my clothing. Needless to say this has greatly effected my life. I've ended up dropping out of school as I cannot participate in group activities, discussions or give speeches without this happening. I've recently been prescribed Zoloft for social anxiety. Has anyone else had this specific problem (excessive sweating in social situations)? If so, does zoloft alleviate or worsen the condition

Drugs don't replace accepting being who you are. Then you won't have anxiety...
Reply:Just incase you didn't get my other answer:

HERE IS THE ANSWER TO YOUR PRAYERS!

I myself have Social Anxiety. Doctor has tried many different meds. to help me. Currently taking Diazepam ( Valium ) and Effexor. But it does NOTHING for the excessive sweating. But I found a product that is cheap. Lasts 7 - 10 days and it actually COMPLETELY stops all the embarrassing sweating. And best of all it's actually pretty cheap. It's called Sweat Block. Below is a link to there website and they also sell it on eBay. I guarantee you it will change your life as it has mine! Give it a shot.......
Reply:Yes, there is a name for the excessive sweating - and I can't think of it. There is a roll-on substance that you can get prescribed from your dermatologist that will alleviate this excessive sweating. You can use it anywhere on your body to inhibit the sweating, underarms, forehead - anywhere.

Once that is controlled you can work on the social anxiety.
Reply:Your problem could be psychosomatic, and it's actually more common then one would think. I think a solution to your problem would to combine psychotherapy or group therapy with a good antiperspirant that's been researched and safe... The condition is called hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). The name isn't cause specific, it applies for all excessive sweating, no matter the source or "cause."

There's a lot of info on this website, and I recommend the product as well (being that I use it, I suffer from excessive sweating too).

Reply:Perhaps you should discuss this with your doctor who prescribled Zoloft for you as there was recall on this medication sometime ago. Marijuana is notr giving you this increase anxiety unless it is mixed with something else. Neverthless I would discuss this with my doctor and ask for a change of mediction.
Reply:First I would like to congratulate you on being able to get away from using Marijuana.

I also have social anxiety. Today I left Thanksgiving dinner with my family because I had a lot of anxiety.

Medications like Zoloft do help. The SSRIs like Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac are all known to help with social anxiety.

I haven't had the problem with sweating, but Zoloft may help alleviate the sweating. If Zoloft makes the sweating worse, then you would want to stop taking it.

In addition to taking medication, you may also want to try to expose yourself more and more to social situations. Don't try going to a highly social event where your anxiety will go through the roof, that could be counter productive. But if you get outside, and walk around, have small amounts of contact with people, take baby steps, you will eventually be able to lead a social life again. This is called "Cognitive Behavior Therapy", and most psychiatrists will recommend this in addition to medication. Of course I don't know all the details of what you are suffering from, but I suspect that this would benefit you.

I wish you luck, and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
Reply:About the profuse sweating. I sweat like someone is pouring liquid over my head. It starts dripping off my hair and gets on my glasses and then I can't see. And it happens in stores. I HATE IT!

I've had people come up to me and ask if I'm ok or need some help. I tell them 'no', I do this all the time.

The thint with me though is that I am pretty sure that I am going through menapause. 'For the last 2 yrs!'

And I take meds that I'm sure has something to do with it also. But, I am not willing to change my meds.

I try to go out at night when it is cooler. I make my shopping trips as long as I can stand it.

Take a cotton hanky with you. You will probably drench it fairly quickly but it will help.

When I am at home or in the car, in the summer time I am glued to the air conditioner...and in the winter I have the windows down on the car and tell people with me to bundle up. ~smile~

There are water pills that you can take that may eleviate some of it. But, you need to go p-p all the time, and your mouth gets dry. It has its pros and cons.

I know that I am miserable and embarrased to be out in public when I am like this, and it is all the time.

There are times that I would rather just stay home and have someone else go out and have all the fun that I could be having.

Sooo, just go out on short social outings. Before you get to the poing that your hair is dripping all over you.

Try lengthening these outings.

And PLEASE don't be self conscience.

When people look at me like they think that I am either going to melt or sweat on them I just look back and wipe my forehead and neck and glasses one more time.

I don't know if the Zoloft would be a part of making you sweat. You need to talk to your Dr.

Don't forget to ask him if the water pills would be something that would be right for you.

Good luck ~wink~
Reply:I received an SSRI like Zoloft for depression. After the temporary stress was over I decided to continue it because it significantly reduced my social anxiety/phobia. I also found that when I have to speak in public that the dreaded sweating and quavering voice was better when I took a single dose of a Beta Blocker like Inderal beforehand. Neither drug is habit forming. Like most people with social anxiety this tends to be a life long problem so if the Zoloft works don't be in a hurry to stop it.
Reply:Stay away from psychiatrists!! http://antipsychiatry.org

The zoloft will not help your social anxiety. There is no drug that can change your mind about how you feel in social situations. Psychiatrists are brainwashed. Just keep exposing yourself. Go to a restaurant... a bar. Shopping malls.

-Read a biography on somebody who inpires you. -Sorry... not much of a solution but just realize that you are as good as, as important as everybody else. This is just temporary... you are creating the problem in your mind. Just keep telling yourself to relax. You have to retrain yourself.
