Social security number in the US?
I believe you have to become a citizen. My mom had to go through courses and some time in US requirements. Check with some govermental answers sites.
Reply:Depends on your Visa. Under some visas like J-1, you can get a non-working SSN. Check it out with social security office. But most students in US on student visa, can't legally work. US citizens can get a SSN by applying with birth certificate and identification.

Don't say why you want/need one.
Reply:If you are here only on a student visa, you cannot get a social security number.
Reply:You must have documents that say you're a US Citizen or that you're allowed to work in the US (Work Visa, Permanent Residency)

You only need a SSN if you want to pay into Social Security and recieve it later on.

If you don't have a SSN, then you will be assigned a tax number instead, I believe.
