Social security number in the US?

eah,am an internationl student fresh in the US and i want a social security number,how can i get one?ow difficult can it be as an international student to have a social security number?Whats the process to pass tru to get a social security number?

You do NOT have to be a US citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) to get a SSN; you simply have to be someone who needs one. Temporary workers, students, and many others in nonimmigrant statuses in the US need and receive SSNs every day. Reply:You would have to change your visa status and undergo the process to become an American citizen.
Reply:If you are a visa holder then you need to check your visa status. Not all visa holders are eligible for SSN. If you are eligible then you just go to your local SSN office and apply.
Reply:I think the only way you as an international student with F1 visa can apply for SSN is to get a job in your designated school ( this is only for tax purposes.) But then you can only work up to 20 hours a week.





But if you are not planning to work in school, there's no reason for you to get a SSN.
Reply:You can go down to the Social Security Office and ask them without any trouble at all. They will probably send you to other offices, but if you are legal, doing the job right will be worth your while.

Reply:u wrote that u are an international student so i'm assuming that u r on F-1;if so u are eligibel to apply for SSN.But there is one condition, F-1 students must have a job and be currently working in order to apply for a SSN. .An application with a future start date will not be accepted.


SSN is mainly for tax purposes
