What should be done to reform the social security program?
i have no idea
Reply:Suggest reading Nancy Altman's excellent book, "The Battle for Social Security." which contains a thoughtful workable plan to address this question. Altman worked on SS issues the last time there was a major reform to Social Security (1982) under the Reagan administration. Report It
Reply:Stop giving every druggie SSI
Reply:Social security is not a political problem or issue so much as it is a cultural and social one. What America has to decide first of all is what sort of society it wants--a Social Darwinian, dog eat dog, every person for him or herself society, or a more communitarian society where everyone helps everyone else?
A selfish, self-centered, individualistic society, or a more generous, other-involved, collectivistic society? A society where the rich are few and the poor are many or one where there is no such vast difference. A society where the choice when you get sick is not bankruptcy or death, but one where there is general medical security. A society where everyone gets an education or where education is costly, ineffective, and enslaving.
Only when America decides these questions can there be social security reform. If America wants a purely selfish, self-centered, Social Darwinian society with no collective responsibilities, then do away with the whole program, let people work until they die and give them poison pills to kill themselves if they can't work and have no money in their old age. If America wants a more communitarian society, then make social security include a valid medical security component (now it's medicare A,B,C,and D), and a valid and reasonable old-age stipend.
