Social Worker Career?

So basically I was thinking about working at an adoption agency and I seen that for any real position working with children and all you need a degree in social work. I am 24 and about to graduate with an associates in small business marketing and management..I am wondering what are the steps into becoming a social worker. I was thinking about going back to school in spring of 09 to start working on a BA in social work...Thanks.

Social Worker Career?
It sounds like you actually know the steps. Going back for your BSW (you want to make sure you are going to an accredited program - see www.cswe.org for all accredited programs in the US). You may need to take some prerequisite courses for the social work major (check with the school you are applying for). In adoptions you may need to go on for your MSW (which you can complete in a year if you do a BSW).

Be careful with anecdotal experiences about jobs and salaries (it can depend on that one person) - having educated 1000's of students I can tell you that the BSW opens up many more entry level human service jobs as compared to any other BA and the MSW opens up many more jobs than any other human service related MA (and pays better than any other degree at the MA level - many want to compare business to social work or PhD to MSW - these are not useful comparisons).

Reply:If it's in your heart, i say go for it! But i should warn you that social work is a low paying field. You will enjoy helping others, but the pay really isn't all that great. One of my friends is a social worker and she said she likes what she does, the pay isn't all that great, but she gets gratitude out of helping someone else. You can go and get a BA in this field, but when my friend got a BA, she had a hard time finding work afterwards and even when she got her masters' degree, it was twice as difficult. I think the sky is the limit for whatever you want to do, but before you do i want you to check the salary for a social worker on www.salary.com. Then, go from there.

Good luck!!
