My Social Security Number may have been stolen?

I went to get my permit a while ago and when I got it, they said someone else used my Social Security Number to get their license. The lady told me the guy who stole it was from New Jersey, and I used to live in New Jersey so I know this wasn't a mistake and something was wrong. My mommy went to the Social Security Office and they checked on their computers. They said the only person that came up under my Social Security Number was me. So my question is was my Social Security Number stolen and how do I find out for sure? The lady at the permit place said yes, but the actual Social Security Office said no, I was the only one. Also, is there any way this guy can block his name from coming up on the Social Security Office's computers? Like are there any scams you can do to make sure you don't get caught? Sorry 4 all the questions, and thanks 4 your help! =)

No one has the capability to block their name from coming up on the Social Security office and there have been instances on one system there, it showed no while on another it showed yes there was someone else using your ss#


Here is what you also need to do and do it quickly.


Contact the credit reporting services, you can call their toll free numbers, put a fraud alert on your credit reports. This one is temporary in that it lasts for 90 days. It will ask you for a phone # to prevent anyone from getting credit in your name and ruining it. If you can go back to the DMV to get the information about the person who used your SS#, do so and then file a police report. If not, go to the police anyway so you can have a police report on record and get copies and send that to the credit reporting agencies as well


This way you can have a 7 year fraud alert added to your report and ANYONE requesting credit for you will have to contact you first.


Don't listen to that moron that said tough luck, just wait until they go through it. I.D thieves are extremely enterprising and more often than not have connections at banks, DMVs, doctors offices, anywhere information with your ss# can be.

Reply:Yes, someone else can use your number to get a liscense, but only if they present a card that looks very real. They can then get an id, then get a job, then credit, all using your ssn.


However, none of this will show with the SSA until someone uses your ssn to gain employment legally. The only record the SSA carries is a record of employment.


It is very likely that someone could do far worse damage with your credit rating than anything else.


I would suggest that you contact the 3 credit agencies and request a free copy of your credit report. MAKE SURE YOU GET A COPY FROM EACY AGENCY!! Reports of credit usage often appear much later than when the applications happen, up to a year and a half, so you will need to keep up with this and check about once a year for problems. If you are under 18, you should have none or very little credit. If you are over 18, then it is important that you keep a record of both your credit reports as well as your credit applications.


If/when you have any errors with your report, you will have to show proof of your identity and your credit history. You must first report to the Credit agencies, then you must also report to the SSA, so that they can monitor employment.


Ultimately, your credit is at stake, not your SSN. His ability to work on your number is not nearly as damaging as is his ability to use your credit and defalt on his loans.
